About
Artist Statement:
Early on in my life, I decided that I was going to be a space explorer and design unimaginable spaceships that would take me on expeditions to the corners of the universe. As a child I loved making and observing kites as they elevated until I ran out of string. After crash landing off the rooftop of my one story house in Mexico in my first attempt to fly with a giant hand made kite, I realized that space exploration would not be an easy task, a harsh lesson for a seven year old. I decided to put my ship designs on hold until further study was conducted. I then realized that if I landed on a different planet, It would most likely be inhabited with various types of flora and organisms not found on earth. I took joy in analyzing organic life around me and experimented with organisms such as, bean sprouts and small fish from the local brook. I did not realize it at the time, but I was learning a great deal about the world. My ambition with the cosmos has been compounded ever since.
It was only as an artist that I realized just how large the universe is. It is not only massive in size but its also vast in time which leaves those who ponder about it, such as I, puzzled by the purpose of the intent to accomplishing anything in the unraveling of such vastness. But I am a great believer that human nature triumphs over the phenomenon of the unknown. This is why I have continued my interest in the sciences and began to scrutinize the microcosms around us to see what else can be discover.
My work reflects personal and general theories relating to the arts, sciences and society. The general mood of the work is a reflection of my personal sensitivities, memories and general theories.
I like to draw and paint often. My work is very gestural sometimes. The sensory information that affects my brush strokes inversely parallels the figurative content I am tying to capture. As the sensory information increases, so does the abstraction of the composition. In some cases overpowering the figurative content. The reason for the abstraction is due to the use of expressionistic and gestural forms to convey a presence of sound and other natural components into a visual form. This mix of techniques has enabled me to create work rich with subconscious and rational thought.
I am also interested in Robots. My interest in art bots started with my desire to have a little robotic assistant to make art, but it has grown into something else. I then wanted to make a robot that made a painting without me interrupting the process. The system that I created interprets reality through a camera or an image and then translates that into another image. The system is like a buffer, or a filter, to generate another image. In essence, it’s like seeing how a robot interprets reality and then us interpreting what the robot interpreted and then created. People view the world in a certain way through five senses. Then we interpret that world through painting. The robots I have made are limited because they don’t have five senses. It’s all logic that comes from one sense, which is vision through a camera or image. They interpret the world through that image or video feed. To the robot, the world is a mere set of pixels. But they still don’t know what the world is. They just do.
But they don’t know what or why.
