Oscar Torres: Everlasting Presence
July 5 - July18, 2005

Opening Reception: Thursday, July 7th, 6pm-9pm

The Melody Weir Gallery presents Oscar Torres' first solo exhibition in New York City.

"Art and science are like snowy winters and hot chocolate to me," says artist Oscar Torres. His first solo exhibition, "Everlasting Presence," will run at the Melody Weir Gallery from July 5 – July 18, 2005.

Oscar Torres' initial interest in the use of math and science as inspiration for his artwork developed further as he experimented with the depiction of sound in a landscape. Torres then took a tangent from traditional landscape renderings and began to integrate the math theory he had previously studied (as an engineering student) into his work. "All of the sudden, Pythagorean theorems and kinetic forces began to morph my visions of sunsets," says Torres.

Oscar Torres’ fascination with math and science grew deeper as he focused on work of artists such as, Galileo Galilei, Leonardo da Vinci, and Salvador Dali. As a result Torres says he has become “a neoteric polymath artist in a quest to connect the dots.”

In his landscapes, Torres uses a unique combination of styles to create work that resembles that of the Surrealists, and adding his own abstract and gestural twist. The works include landscapes such as "Everlasting Happiness” (2000), a painting that captures the concept of optimism, curiosity and indifference.

In his most recent work, exhibited in the Melody Weir Gallery show, Torres shifts his focus from emotion to more theoretical themes. "Golden Spiral" (2005), for example, is inspired by the concept of the golden ratio in trigonometry and Fibonacci numbers, and is a unique bridge between art, math and science.

Oscar Torres was born in México and moved to the New York metro area in the early 1980's. In 2003 he was awarded a B.F.A. from Purchase College, State University of New York where he studied under artists such as Warren Lehrer and Michael Rakowitz.
