Six Paradoxes of Leadership. By Blair Sheppard.

Cliff Notes: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The world is moving fast, but decisions need to be strategic.
Choosing vs Decision

The Paradoxes:

Tech-Savvy Humanist

Technology is impeding on who we are. We need to understand implications of technology’s effect on society. Know/ notice and catch the unintended consequences before it turns the world into something we don’t want.
Global-Minded Localist

Global vs Local

How is global affecting local? eg. water, air pollution, tech. build, understanding global systems, but bring them down (contextualize them) to the local level environment.

Strategic Executor

Can’t sit back on a mountain and strategize and role down decisions to execution level. World is moving too fast for usual strategy and execution methods. If you are not able to execute, you won’t have the time to strategize; if you don’t strategize you will go to the wrong place. You have to do both simultaneously now a days. You have to have both in the same person or people (team) meld them together.

Humble Hero

Step up and take action; danger is that leader takes a flawed path; must give people the chance to error correct to encourage group learning. Leader doesn’t know if this is right, or if the path is right, but the leader believes that it’s the best they got. Encourages to choose the path and figure it out together as they go.

Traditional Innovator

If we just innovate; we bring nothing with us. Traditions and assets cannot be left behind; those are the strength; but they can’t constrain us (otherwise we’re dead in the water). Must re-structure these to something that resonates with the future.

High-Integrity Politician

Remembering the reason why you’re encouraging people, what the goal is. And remember that the people need to be convinced that we need to move forward; but never forget the goal/purpose.
